National Tree Day is coming up on Sept. 24 to allow Canadians to appreciate the benefits trees provide—clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand, and connecting with nature.

“On March 2, 2011 a private members motion to declare the Wednesday of National Forest Week, National Tree Day, received consent from the House of Commons,” Laura Banks, Tree Canada’s communications officer, told Canadian Groundskeeper. “The motion was presented by Royal Galipeau, MP, at the urging of Tree Canada.”

Banks said this year’s main celebratory event will take place at Mount Royal Park in Montreal, Que. All regional school and community events are currently listed by province on the National Tree Day website.
